The show traces the full arc of the painting’s life: 
from Amélie Matisse, the professional hat-maker 
who was its subject, to the Left Bank apartment 
of Leo and Gertrude Stein, who bought it on the 
final day of the 1905 Salon, to San Francisco, where 
Michael and Sarah Stein brought it in 1935. It closes 
with the artists it shaped, including Joan Brown, 
Richard Diebenkorn, David Park, David Hockney, 
and Rachel Harrison. 
