The painting that shocked Paris in 1905 
hasn’t moved since 1935. This summer at 
SFMOMA, it’s the center of everything.
On view through September 13, 2026, 
the exhibition opens with a re-creation 
of Gallery VII from the 1905 Salon d’Au-
tomne, where all ten artists from the 
original hanging are represented. It was 
that room that prompted critic Louis 
Vauxcelles to coin the term fauve, mean-
ing wild beasts, in his October 17, 1905 
review in Gil Blas.
