Food provides more than nutrition. It offers emotional satisfaction, social connection, and cultural meaning. Yet before it can benefit the body, it must be broken down into usable nutrients—glucose, amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals—through diges- tion for absorption. This process relies on both mechanical and chemical digestion, after which nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream or lymph and delivered to cells. With age—particularly after 50 or 60—the digestive system becomes less efficient. This affects how food is processed, trans- ported, and absorbed, often leading to indigestion, reduced nutrient intake, and constipation. Delayed gastric emptying can cause bloating and early fullness, while reduced enzyme and acid production may impair nutrient release and utilization, contrib- uting to nutrient deficiencies. Longevity science has identified ways to help the body more effectively convert food into essential nutrients. The foundation is a varied diet rich in vegetables, fruits, and nuts, supported when needed by digestive enzymes and stomach acid. Supplementation with vitamins and trace minerals may also help.
