Bedel
方式所驱动。”若换作别人,这句话或许听上去像某种营销辞藻;
South Coast Plaza
Bedel
Casa、Bitácora de Composición、Pura Esencia。
Step through the carved wooden doors and the rhythm of the world
outside falls away. The room truly settles around you: warm adobe
walls, a cherry wood ceiling, floors of Cotto Lombardo sourced from
northern Italy and engraved with a curling emblem. Bronze wall
lamps, cast in an alloy designed by the founder himself, throw a
low and generous light. At the center of the space, a sinuous wooden
table—serpentine, hand-carved for this gallery alone—holds 105
bottles, showcasing the most glorious centerpiece we’ve ever seen.
This is Fueguia 1833’s first West Coast gallery, opened this spring
at South Coast Plaza. This is not simply a store. It feels closer to a
chapel, or perhaps a laboratory—which, as it happens, was exactly
founder Julián Bedel’s vision.
A Patagonian Beginning
Fueguia 1833 was born in 2010 in Argentina, the vision of Bedel:
artist, self-taught perfumer, obsessive student of native botanicals.
The name gestures to Tierra del Fuego, the wild southern tip of
the Americas. From that beginning, Bedel built something rare in
modern perfumery: a vertically integrated house where botanical
research, ingredient development, formulation, and production all
happen with one artistic mind. Every scent is released in limited
editions. An archive of vintage perfumes ages quietly for more than
five years, their character deepening with time.
“My approach to scent has always been driven by connecting with
the divine, in a way,” Bedel has said. It is the kind of line that could
sound like marketing from a less singular figure. From Bedel, it
reads as a thesis statement.
The Gallery
The South Coast Plaza space, over 70 square meters, designed by
Bedel himself, is the house’s third in the United States, following
two galleries in New York City. Each Fueguia gallery shares a com-
mon vocabulary: the central wooden table, the deep blue drapes,
the handcrafted details that suggest ritual. But each also speaks to
its place. For Orange County, Bedel drew on California villa and
Southwestern adobe traditions. Carved doors open onto niches that
double as windows of display, softening the boundary between the
gallery and the world beyond. Shelving modeled on the tokonoma—
the alcove Japanese homes reserve for art and contemplation—holds
the fuller universe of the brand: Atlas de Ingredientes, Fueguia
Casa, Bitácora de Composición, Pura Esencia.
The effect is a kind of intentional slowness. You do not shop at a
Fueguia gallery so much as experience one.
